hosting service provider manages the carrier compliance (opt-in, out, etc)
passing all other traffic back/forth.

Shared vs.

run on a shared short code.

you better pricing and service than a Tier I. Call and speak with a short code SPECIALIST.
Or call a Tier I and speak with a 20-something about it.

The short code is the 5 or six digit number
that SMS programs get filed (registered) with the carriers. They are obtained
through an organization representing all of the carriers that participate
in the short code program. A hosting company, such as Text Connections, provides that
interface/hosting service.
The process to obtain a private or
dedicated short code:
-
Contract with TxC to secure find out if
you need one;
-
TxC can also tell you immediately if
your program qualifies for SMS.
-
The numbers are leased, not owned;
-
Fees are $500/month for the random 5 or
six digit number ($1000/month for a vanity)
-
Once the number is leased, we
help you define the program in the terms the carriers require and walk
it through their review and provisioning every step of the way.
Expect 8-12 weeks.
-
Sharing a short code is possible under
the right conditions. There are just a few criteria that will
determine that issue.
-
Everything depends upon the short code
and the program(s) filed on it. The options you have are:
message rates (how much you pay per message); the
consumer charge - standard rate or premium, etc.
-
Business applications of SMS require a
short code (shared or private.) In just about every case, a filing
must be submitted to the carriers.

U.S. uses short codes for messaging within the
States. To work SMS programs in Canada they too offer short code programs.
They take a little longer to acquire but work the same as in the U.S.
International countries typically use Long Codes (the 10-12 digit phone
numbers).
